City of Trogir
Trogir is a historic town and harbor, on the Adriatic Coast of Dalmatia. The historic city is situated on a small island between the mainland and the island of Ciovo, 27 km west of the city of Split. It is designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in the 3rd century BC by Greek colonists, Trogir has developed to a major port until the Roman period and had a diocese established by the 11th century.
The urban tradition and culture of Trogir has been enriched by old Greek, Roman and Venetian influences. The historic city is connected to the mainland by a small stone bridge and to the island Ciovo by a drawbridge. It contains the best preserved Romanesque-Gothic complex in central Europe and encompasses a medieval wall surrounded core, a Hellenistic orthogonal street plan embellished with outstanding Renaissance and baroque buildings, palaces, churches and towers, as well as a fortress on a small island.
The Venetian influences in Trogir are reflected by the urban palaces integrated into the street front, such as the Cipiko palace, across form the St. Lawrence Cathedral, having been home to one of the most prominent families of the 15th century. The palace facade displays a carved venetian Gothic window and, at the main entrance, the wooden statue of a cockerel taken from the prow of a Turkish navy ship defeated in a 15th century battle by a member of the Cipiko family.
The warmth and simplicity of Mediterranean architecture is also displayed by the walls of the city core and city entrance, the Trogir Duke's palace, the 15th century Trogir loggia with its gallery and clock tower adorned with statues. Even more impressive are the Romanesque and Gothic Saint Lawrence cathedral or the Kamerlengo fortress with its mighty stone towers.
Trogir, from its waterfront of historic buildings to its medieval core, is a magnificent town-museum. It offers an exciting venue for lovers of cultural and historical monuments, art, architecture, sunny rocky and pebble beaches with islands and islets, picturesque Mediterranean alley walks, outstanding seafood, classical music concerts and folklore shows.
